GyaanGuru Quiz
Bilingual (Hindi/English) GK quiz app for Android with 300+ offline questions - live on Google Play.

Overview

GyaanGuru is a bilingual General Knowledge quiz app for Android, in Hindi and English. It ships 300+ hand-curated questions across 12 categories that work completely offline, plus a live Online Quiz mode with 3,000+ more questions. No login, no ads, no analytics: scores stay on the device. It is live on Google Play.

The Problem

Students preparing for competitive exams want quick, focused GK practice in Hindi, often on low-end phones with patchy internet. Many quiz apps are English-only, ad-heavy or need a constant connection.

What We Built

  • 300+ offline questions across Indian History, Geography, Science, Polity, Economy, Sports, Current Affairs, GK, Computers, Awards, Art & Culture and Environment
  • Online Quiz mode: 3,000+ extra live questions with category and difficulty (Easy, Medium, Hard) selection, powered by the Open Trivia Database
  • 30-second timer on every question, with colour-coded urgency
  • Instant feedback: green or red on every answer
  • Score and games-played tracking, stored locally
  • Full answer review after every quiz

Engineering Highlights

  • A real debugging story. Hindi category titles such as भारतीय इतिहास looked garbled, but only on two screens. The usual suspects (a font override, Toolbar text handling, the Toolbar widget itself) were ruled out one at a time with rebuild-and-verify cycles. The real cause was Android 16's enforced edge-to-edge layout: those screens had no inset handling, so the title was drawn underneath the status bar. Devanagari's conjuncts and matras visibly break under that overlap, while Latin text just looks faintly covered. The fix was one line, fitsSystemWindows="true", once the actual mechanism was understood.
  • No backend needed. Offline content lives in a local question bank, the live mode uses a public REST API, and progress is kept in SharedPreferences.
  • Production build hygiene. R8 minification and resource shrinking on release builds, with GitHub Actions CI on every push.

Tech Stack

Java, native Android Views (ConstraintLayout, RecyclerView), the Open Trivia DB REST API, SharedPreferences, Gradle (AGP 8.9) and GitHub Actions CI.

Status

Live on Google Play (com.gyaanguru.quiz). The source is open under the MIT licence at github.com/mukeshkumar356/gyaanguru-quiz.
