Digital Compass

Overview

Digital Compass is a precise, smooth, real-time compass built on the phone's own motion sensors.

What It Does

• Real-time heading from 0° to 359°
• Direction text, for example North or South East
• Compass rose with cardinal (N, E, S, W) and intercardinal (NE, SE, SW, NW) directions
• Smooth needle with no jitter
• Portrait-locked for stable readings
• Clear message if the device has no compass sensor

How It's Built

• Sensor fusion: heading is calculated from the accelerometer and the magnetometer together.
• Steady needle: a low-pass filter smooths the raw sensor readings.
• Custom compass rose drawn on a Canvas, with 360 tick marks.
