Photo Recovery

Overview

Photo Recovery finds recently deleted photos and videos that are still on the device and restores them.

What It Does

• Find deleted photos and videos still held on the phone
• Browse all photos and all videos as well
• Filter by type (including GIFs) and select all
• Preview before recovering
• Recover selected files and share them

How It's Built

• Trash scan: on Android 11 and newer, it queries MediaStore for trashed items, the "recently deleted" files the system keeps for a while.
• Thumbnail scan: it also looks through leftover thumbnail caches (such as DCIM/.thumbnails) for images that are no longer in the gallery.
• Images load through Glide.
• Honest limits: files that have already been permanently removed and overwritten cannot be recovered.

Tech Stack

Kotlin, MediaStore, Glide, RecyclerView.
